Common Reed
Phragmites australis
One of the most widespread wetland plants in the world, common reed produces towering stands of glaucous stems topped with shimmering, silky plumes that catch the autumn light magnificently. Best reserved for large naturalistic margins and boggy areas where its vigorous rhizomatous spread can be given room or firmly contained.
