The wood ferns are the workhorses of the shaded border, their arching, shuttlecock fronds emerging bronze in spring before deepening to a lustrous dark green that holds through winter in all but the harshest conditions. They knit together beautifully beneath deciduous trees, softening hard edges and providing year-round structure where little else will perform.
