Golden Scaled Male Fern
Dryopteris affinis
Distinguished from other male ferns by the rich golden scales clothing its unfurling croziers in spring, this semi-evergreen species forms strongly architectural vase-shapes that hold their structure well into winter, making it a reliable anchor for shade planting.
