Common Elder

Sambucus nigra

Common elder is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub that delivers two distinct seasons of ornament: broad, honey-scented corymbs of creamy-white flowers in early summer, followed by heavy clusters of glistening black berries that draw birds from autumn through winter. Both flowers and fruit are also prized in the kitchen, making it one of the most productive plants a garden can host.
