Flowering Plants
English bluebell
Hyacinthoides non-scripta
The quintessential British woodland bulb, carpeting the ground in mid-spring with a haze of deep violet-blue, sweetly scented, nodding bells that feel entirely irreplaceable when naturalised beneath deciduous trees or in an informal orchard setting. Its undemanding nature and ability to self-seed mean that, given the right conditions, it will establish generous colonies with almost no intervention.
